AFC/M23 Expands Strongholds in Walikale, North Kivu
Walikale, November 26, 2025 - The AFC/M23 coalition, fighting the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) government, continues to expand its strongholds in the Walikale territory, an area where the opposition is already dominant.
Earlier in 2025, AFC/M23 had established strongholds in the region, but the Doha peace talks forced them to retreat, leaving Walikale town in April to negotiate with the DRC government.
The coalition has been engaged in ongoing clashes with DRC forces, allied with the Wazalendo, in North Kivu. On November 22, fighting erupted in Masisi territory, resulting in AFC/M23 capturing the centers of Mahanga and Kibanda in Osso Byanyungu Gurupoma.
On November 23, AFC/M23 launched a major attack on RDC and Wazalendo positions in Buhimba center, Waloa Yungu commune, Walikale territory. As seen in previous operations in Masisi, RDC and Wazalendo forces withdrew, heading to Kailenge and Luhando, where they reportedly burned down their bases.
The capture of Buhimba center enabled AFC/M23 fighters to seize other key locations in Walikale, including Kimua and Ntoto.
Earlier, on November 21, AFC/M23 had captured Kaliki center, also in Waloa Yungu, Walikale, reportedly possessing advanced military equipment, including rifles.
