AFC/M23 Detains Five Kirumba Notables Over Alleged MP Links

By Amina Kabasele2 min read

Lubero, August 6, 2026 - Five notable figures from Kirumba, including a local nurse, remained in the custody of the Alliance Fleuve Congo/M23 after being detained for about one week.

The AFC/M23 accused the group of collaborating with National Assembly Deputy Muhindo Simisi Obed, who is known for his public opposition to Rwandan aggression in the region. The movement alleged that the notables were involved in destabilising the commune with financial support from the deputy, whose office has been closed.

The detained figures demanded their release, saying the accusations were politically motivated and intended to suppress dissent against AFC/M23 authority. Simisi Obed declined to comment.

The case underscores the political pressure facing local leaders in parts of North Kivu under AFC/M23 influence, where armed control, administrative authority and national political loyalties remain deeply contested.
