WALIKALE, North Kivu March 4, 2026 - The security situation in Walikale territory is deteriorating as AFC/M23 rebels consolidate control over Kibati, following three days of intense clashes with FARDC forces and the Wazalendo militia. Local sources report that after government forces withdrew, rebels secured all positions in the town. On the evening of Tuesday, March 3, additional reinforcements of fighters and ammunition arrived from Masisi territory via the Kashebere axis. Columns of heavily armed fighters were observed entering Kibati, further strengthening the rebels’ hold. The deployment has heightened fears of expanded military operations in the area, with surrounding villages remaining tense. Civilians, already affected by recent fighting, live in fear of further escalation in the coming days. This development underscores the persistent volatility in Walikale, where recurring clashes between AFC/M23 rebels and government forces continue to threaten security and disrupt daily life.
