AFC/M23 Condemns International Silence as DRC Forces Escalate Attacks

Eastern DRC, February 25, 2026 - The AFC/M23 coalition expressed deep disappointment at the international community’s silence amid escalating attacks by the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) government forces, which have targeted both civilians and rebel positions using drones and heavy weaponry.

AFC/M23 spokesman Lawrence Kanyuka reported that large-scale attacks occurred in Rutigita, Rugezi, and border areas of Minembwe and Kitazungura communes in Kalehe territory, causing deaths, mass displacement, and a worsening humanitarian crisis.

Bertrand Bisimwa, AFC/M23 Deputy Director for Political, Diplomatic, and Governance Affairs, criticized the DRC government for violating the ceasefire agreement, accusing it of choosing war over diplomacy. He highlighted the lack of concrete international measures to prevent continued fighting, contrasting the silence of global actors with the attention given when AFC/M23 defends itself.

The attacks on February 25 followed previous drone strikes by DRC forces in central Masisi and surrounding areas on February 24, illustrating a pattern of escalating military operations.
