AFC/M23 Completes Withdrawal from Uvira, Places City Under International Responsibility
Uvira, January 17, 2026 - The AFC/M23 armed group announced on Saturday, January 17, 2026, that it has completed its withdrawal from the city of Uvira in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo, where elements of its military and administrative presence had remained.
The movement had previously announced the withdrawal on January 15, following its seizure of the city in early December, the second largest city in South Kivu province. While most fighters and equipment had already left, reports indicated a residual presence in the city.
On Saturday, a column of fighters in military fatigues, with weapons slung over their shoulders and helmets on, exited the city. Some were on foot, while others traveled aboard trucks. Weapons, including rocket launchers, were visible. Observers counted at least 200 fighters, believed to be the group’s “observation and surveillance unit.”
The AFC/M23 officially declared that it now places Uvira under the full responsibility of the international community, declining all responsibility for the security of the city and its approximately 500,000 residents.
Despite the withdrawal, gunfire, including rocket fire, was reported in the vicinity of Uvira on Saturday morning, leaving local residents with heightened anxiety as the day ended.
This development occurs amid ongoing efforts by the international community, including the African Union, the United States, and regional partners, to stabilize eastern DRC and ensure the protection of civilians following months of armed conflict and territorial disputes.
