AFC/M23 Captures Three Villages In Masisi As Civilians Flee

Goma, August 21, 2026 - AFC/M23 fighters seized three villages in Ufamandu 1 in Masisi after fighting that began on August 18, triggering new displacement toward Walikale and South Kivu.

The rebel movement took Chingete, Katuunda and Miko, while Wazalendo fighters retreated toward Mianda and Lulere. The advance raised fears for nearby Biriko in Waloa-Loanda, Walikale, about 10 kilometers away.

Families fled the affected areas as the rebel push expanded insecurity in a corridor linking Masisi, Walikale and South Kivu. The development adds pressure to humanitarian networks and complicates efforts to stabilize eastern DRC.
