AFC/M23 Captures Kiliba Center Near Uvira
Uvira, South Kivu - December 9, 2025 - The AFC/M23 coalition fighting the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) has seized control of Kiliba center, located approximately 20 kilometers from Uvira city in Uvira Territory.
Since the start of last week’s fighting in the Rusizi Valley, AFC/M23 fighters have steadily pushed back DRC government forces, capturing several key areas, including Katogota, Rurambo, Luberizi, Luvungi, Mutalule, Bwegera, Nyakabere, Sange, and Runingo before advancing to Kiliba.
The advance has caused turmoil in Uvira, with reports of gunfire, reportedly from Wazalendo fighters, prompting the closure of businesses and schools due to security concerns.
Observers also noted that many Burundian troops withdrew from the captured areas, including Runingo, returning home after being overpowered by AFC/M23 forces. The withdrawal followed similar movements on December 8, after the capture of Sange center.
