Rutshuru February 3, 2026 - Fighting erupted early Tuesday morning, February 3, between AFC/M23 rebels and Wazalendo forces in Kivuma and Kanyangohe, two locations in the Bwito chiefdom (Rutshuru territory) of North Kivu. The rebels, coming from the town of Mweso in neighboring Masisi territory, targeted these areas, located about five kilometers from this strategic town. Reports indicate the AFC/M23 launched simultaneous attacks against Wazalendo positions on the hills overlooking Kivuma and Kanyangohe, aiming to dislodge them, but their offensive was unsuccessful. After several hours of intense fighting, the rebels retreated to Mweso, their point of origin. These clashes have caused massive civilian displacements, worsening the already dire humanitarian situation in the region. Many families fled their villages, seeking refuge in Mweso, Muhongozi, and other locations. Local humanitarian sources report that the number of displaced people is increasing daily, with many families living in classrooms under precarious conditions, lacking adequate food, healthcare, and protection.
