FIZI, South Kivu - Fierce fighting erupted between AFC/M23 fighters and the Armed Forces of the Democratic Republic of Congo (FARDC), backed by Wazalendo militias, in the Makabola center of Fizi Territory on December 24, 2025, just days before Christmas.

The clashes lasted throughout the day and spread across several locations, including Makabola 1, Makabola 2, Kiringi, and Kirambi. Heavy weapons and drones were reportedly used during the confrontations, heightening fears among civilians.

As fighting intensified, large numbers of residents from Makabola and surrounding villages such as Bangwi, Kasenya, and Makabola 1 fled their homes on December 24, seeking safety in areas to the north, including the city of Uvira.

Local sources in Fizi reported that DRC forces are being reinforced, particularly in the Swima and Munene areas, with additional troops arriving by aircraft and boats.

At the same time, AFC/M23 fighters reportedly strengthened their presence in zones they have controlled for several days, notably in Makabola, as part of efforts to reinforce security.

On December 25, calm returned to Makabola. No fighting was reported, and residents were able to attend church services and celebrate Christmas, marking a brief pause in hostilities after a day of intense violence.
