AES Condemns “Barbaric” Attack on Niamey Infrastructure

Niamey, January 31, 2026 - The Confederation of Sahel States (AES) strongly condemned the barbaric and cowardly attack carried out on the night of January 28-29, 2026, targeting Air Base 101 and Diori Hamani International Airport in Niamey, Niger. The AES described the assault as a premeditated, coordinated, and indiscriminate attack, endangering both strategic infrastructure and civilian facilities, and posing serious risks to innocent civilians and property. In a statement, the AES emphasized that the violence is part of a broader destabilization strategy, fueled by support networks, including foreign actors, whose moral and political responsibility is called into question. The Confederation reaffirmed that: Perpetrators, along with anyone who finances, arms, informs, or politically supports them, will be held accountable. Member states remain united, vigilant, and committed to a coordinated and sovereign fight against terrorism. The AES expresses full solidarity with the people and government of Niger, praising the courage of its defense and security forces. The Confederation concluded by reaffirming the determination of the Sahelian peoples to defend sovereignty, protect populations, and pursue a future of peace, justice, and independence.
