A Month Without Fighting Between FARDC and AFC/M23 in Osso Banyungu Sector

Kinshasa, February 3, 2026 - The Osso Banyungu sector (Masisi territory, North Kivu) has experienced a lull for nearly a month, with no clashes reported between government forces (FARDC) and AFC/M23 rebels.

Local sources report that both sides are holding their positions. The rebels have not advanced along any new axes, while the FARDC, supported by the Wazalendo, remain entrenched in their initial lines.

This relative stability has enabled the spontaneous return of people to several villages. Displaced families who fled hostilities are gradually returning, despite a fragile security situation.

A tentative resumption of socio-economic activity is observed, particularly in local markets and small businesses, though progress is limited due to persistent insecurity on certain roads.

From a humanitarian perspective, the situation remains worrying. Needs are immense, while humanitarian access is severely restricted, limiting assistance to affected populations.

Local civil society actors are calling for the consolidation of this lull and advocating for initiatives to restore lasting peace, enabling the return of government administration, basic social services, and humanitarian aid to the Osso Banyungu sector.

The sector had previously been shaken in December 2015 by repeated clashes between AFC/M23 rebels and the FARDC, supported by the Wazalendo.
