4th Rapid Intervention Battalion Class Trains in Tactical Mobility

Koulikoro -, December 31, 2025 - Amid ongoing security challenges, the Malian Armed Forces (FAMa) are placing renewed emphasis on the Rapid Intervention Battalions (BIR) to enhance their operational capacity against terrorist threats. In Koulikoro, the 4th graduating class of this elite unit is undergoing intensive training to prepare for deployment in complex operational environments.

The creation of the BIR was part of a strategic initiative by Malian authorities to respond swiftly to the resurgence of terrorist attacks, intercommunal violence, and the pressures these pose on civilian populations. These units are designed for rapid deployment across the country, equipped and trained to operate under the diverse conditions encountered in Mali.

Currently stationed at the Boubacar Sada Sy Training Center in Koulikoro, the 4th BIR class is specializing in mobility-focused tactics. Under the supervision of instructors from the National Gendarmerie, trainees are refining skills critical for operational effectiveness, including:

Motorcycle riding in challenging terrains

Obstacle crossing and alignment techniques

Two-wheeled vehicle control

Navigation through chicanes

Emergency braking procedures

While the precise operational deployment of these units has not yet been disclosed, their missions are guided by three core principles: mobility, specialization, and proximity. The BIRs are expected to strengthen national security and pursue armed terrorist groups relentlessly, even into their last strongholds.

Colonel-Major Boubacar Serme, director of the training center, commended the professionalism of the recruits, noting that the BIR program represents a strategic modernization of FAMa in response to an asymmetric and evolving conflict environment. “This fourth graduating class embodies the political will to modernize our army,” he stated.

The training concluded with a demonstration of the operational capabilities acquired by the recruits, highlighting the growing effectiveness and responsiveness of Mali’s elite forces in maintaining national security.
