Ugandan Court Recognizes Rwandan Judgment In MUA Insurance Claim

By Jean-Marc Okito2 min read

Kigali, August 24, 2026 - MUA Insurance Rwanda Ltd. was cleared to pursue enforcement proceedings against Roko Construction Ltd. after the Kampala High Court ruled that a Rwanda High Court judgment is enforceable in Uganda.

Judge Susan Odongo ordered that the Rwanda High Court's September 13, 2024 judgment be entered as a final judgment in Uganda. The decision allows MUA Insurance to seek recovery of 14.87 billion Ugandan shillings, equivalent to about Rwf5.9 billion.

The Rwandan judgment ordered Roko Construction to pay US$3.28 million and Rwf1.3 billion linked to construction and insurance obligations. The sums include US$2.93 million tied to work on the Village Health Works project, US$350,000 for insurance related to Betts & Townsend Project Management Ltd., and Rwf1.3 billion for insurance on construction work at the I&M Bank Rwanda building, plus legal and other costs.

The case is significant for cross-border commercial enforcement, showing that Rwandan court judgments can be recognized in a neighboring jurisdiction in disputes involving construction, insurance and major projects.
