Twin Ibanda Fires Kill One and Destroy Over 100 Homes

Bukavu, South Kivu, August 13, 2026 - Two fires in Bukavu’s Ibanda commune within days killed one woman and destroyed more than 100 houses. On August 10, a blaze on the Panzi/Bizimana axis destroyed about 47 homes, with defective wiring cited. On August 12, fire along Anciens Combattants 3 and Ruzizi 2 destroyed over 80 houses on Anciens Combattants alone; Ndendere quarter chief Albert Migabo again pointed to faulty electrical installations. Residents say Ibanda has faced a months-long pattern of fires without an effective prevention plan.
