Airtel Africa Launches Africa’s First Commercial Starlink Mobile in DRC

Kinshasa, DRC, August 14, 2026 - Airtel Africa and Starlink launched commercial satellite-to-mobile service in the DRC-the first such commercial deployment in Africa-letting customers with compatible Android LTE smartphones use low-data apps such as WhatsApp and send SMS under open sky without extra hardware; Apple support is expected later. The December 2025 partnership followed Kenya tests in March 2026. Users need an active Airtel data or roaming plan; a 30-day free trial is available via MyAirtel, then eligible data packs. Airtel Africa CEO Sunil Taldar and Airtel RDC CEO Theirry Diasonama said the service extends connectivity beyond terrestrial coverage for remote logistics, humanitarian and health work, farming, mining, and emergencies.
