Rwanda Trains 150 Teachers on Artificial Intelligence to Transform Education

Kigali, October 25, 2025 - Rwanda is stepping up its use of artificial intelligence (AI) in education, with more than 150 teachers trained to integrate AI into classrooms, the Minister of Education, Joseph Nsengimana, announced at the Mobile World Congress 2025.

The training is part of the government’s ongoing implementation of the ICT Policy, approved two years ago, aimed at harnessing technology to improve learning outcomes and address challenges such as school overcrowding.

Minister Nsengimana explained that AI will assist in monitoring and supporting students, particularly in schools facing a shortage of teachers. “AI will be used to help students when we have a shortage of teachers, because it will allow more students to be monitored in a shorter time than one teacher could do,” he said.

The initial cohort of 150 teachers-five from each district-will serve as trainers for their peers, ensuring a nationwide rollout of AI in classrooms. The Minister added that AI-powered smart technology is expected to begin being used in schools next year.

Currently, Rwanda has 107,741 teachers across kindergartens, primary, and secondary schools, including 50,468 men and 57,273 women. The government has already introduced AI in other sectors, including health, research, and agriculture, where it is used for tasks such as pest control, irrigation, and monitoring.

This initiative marks a significant step in Rwanda’s efforts to modernize its education system, enhance teaching efficiency, and prepare students for a future driven by technology.
