Rwanda Secures One Bronze Medal at Commonwealth Games

Glasgow, Scotland, August 3, 2026 - Rwanda finished its Commonwealth Games campaign with one medal after runner Florence Niyonkuru claimed bronze in the women’s 10,000 metres, giving the country its only podium finish among 10 athletes.

Niyonkuru placed third in the 10,000m to record Rwanda’s best result at the Games. Other Rwandan athletes struggled to reach the podium, with Emeline Imanizabayo finishing ninth in the women’s 500m, while Honorine Iribagiza, Magnifique Umutesiwase and Claire Uwitonze competed in various middle- and long-distance events without securing medals. Clementine Uwiduhaye finished eighth in the women’s 100m para-athletics event.

In judo, Rwanda’s Alban Bouvet was eliminated in the round of 16 by Australia’s Joshua Katz, who went on to win silver. Rwanda also fielded swimmers Jayden Ntwali, Sheja Kean Murenzi and Axela Marta Echessah in several events, but none reached the podium.

The Games, held in Glasgow and bringing together 74 countries and 2,729 athletes across 10 sports, were dominated by Australia, which topped the medal table with 171 medals, including 70 gold, 45 silver and 56 bronze. Great Britain followed with 110 medals.
