Rwanda’s Education Ministry moves to strengthen counseling support after student suicide

Kigali, Rwanda, March 27, 2026 - The Ministry of Education (MINEDUC) says it is working on introducing enhanced psychological counseling services in schools following recent cases of student deaths suspected to be linked to suicide. The announcement comes after the death of a student at RP Tumba College of Vocational Education in Rulindo District on March 24, 2026. Authorities are investigating circumstances surrounding the incident, which also involved the death of a visiting student. Education Minister Joseph Nsengimana said the government is considering new measures to strengthen mental health and psychosocial support systems within schools and higher learning institutions. He noted that the initiative aims to complement existing student support programs, particularly for learners in secondary schools and public higher education institutions, where government assistance is already provided. The minister emphasized that early identification of psychological distress among students is a key priority, adding that counseling services could play a critical role in prevention efforts. He also urged parents and guardians to remain actively involved in the lives of their children, stressing that education is a shared responsibility between schools and families. Authorities continue to investigate the recent incident, with findings expected to clarify the circumstances surrounding the deaths. According to national health data, hundreds of suicide attempts are recorded annually in Rwanda, with young people aged 19 to 35 representing the largest proportion of cases. Officials say the figures highlight the need for stronger mental health awareness and intervention strategies in schools and communities.
