Rwanda Clinches East African Community Cup in Sweden
Gävle, Sweden, 9 August 2026 - Rwanda’s diaspora football team in Sweden has won the East African Community Cup, defeating Somalia 4-3 in a closely contested final held on 8 August.
The tournament, organized by the Rwandan Embassy in Sweden in collaboration with local football players, brought together four teams representing Rwanda, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Burundi and Somalia.
Rwanda opened its campaign with a 2-0 victory over Burundi, while Somalia advanced to the final after a dominant 6-0 win over the DRC. Rwanda then secured the title with a 4-3 victory over Somalia in the final.
Rwandan Ambassador to Sweden Dr Diane Gashumba congratulated the players for their determination, teamwork and commitment, praising their performance as a source of pride for the Rwandan community.
The annual tournament brings together East African communities in Sweden through football, with the aim of promoting unity, friendship and social cohesion among the participating communities.
