Nyamagabe Deputy Mayor Released as Investigation Continues

Nyamagabe, 6 August 2026 - Nyamagabe District Deputy Mayor in charge of social welfare, Uwamariya Agnes, has been temporarily released after being questioned in an investigation into alleged failure to report a criminal offense.

Uwamariya was arrested on 29 July and released on 4 August under provisions of Rwanda’s Criminal Procedure Code allowing suspects facing offenses carrying less than two years’ imprisonment to remain free while proceedings continue. She has since resumed her duties at the district office.

The case is linked to Nkurikiyimana Pierre, Executive Secretary of Musebeya Sector, who was arrested on 24 July over allegations that he assaulted a woman serving as a cell leader. The allegations reportedly followed repeated requests for sexual favors, which the woman rejected. It is further alleged that Nkurikiyimana subsequently sought to have her transferred to another sector, away from her family.

The cell leader reportedly raised the matter with Uwamariya, alleging that Nkurikiyimana had assaulted her, but the issue was not resolved. The matter was later reported to investigators, leading to Nkurikiyimana’s arrest at the Gasaka RIB station, where Uwamariya was also detained.

The alleged offense of failing to report a criminal offense carries a six-month to one-year prison sentence and a fine ranging from Rwf100,000 to Rwf300,000 under Rwanda’s law on offenses and penalties.

Uwamariya has denied the allegations, maintaining that she did not commit the offense for which she is being investigated. The prosecution’s investigation remains ongoing.
