Déby Pardons Opposition Leader Success Masra

N’Djamena, 14 August 2026 - Chadian President Mahamat Idriss Déby has pardoned former Prime Minister and opposition leader Success Masra, ending his more than year-long imprisonment and paving the way for his release in the coming days.

Masra was sentenced to 20 years in prison and fined one billion CFA francs, about $1.77 million, after being convicted of inciting violence and involvement in a murder case. His prosecution had drawn criticism from rights groups, which argued that the case was politically motivated.

The pardon also covers eight other political figures. The authorities said the nine individuals will be released once the Ministry of Justice completes the necessary procedures, while civil penalties imposed by the courts will remain in force.

Masra served as prime minister before becoming a prominent political rival of President Déby and one of Chad’s most outspoken opposition figures.
