MPs Demand Action on Infrastructure and Health

The Ministry of Infrastructure was ordered to prepare a plan for accelerating delayed projects, including the Nkombo II ferry, the Base-Butaro-Kidaho road, G+3 school construction in Musanze and infrastructure linked to the Bumbogo housing project. The ministry was also given three months to present sustainable strategies for road maintenance that would reduce long-term costs to the state.

Rwanda Polytechnic was instructed to refund Rwf256.6 million in student deposits within six months. The Ministry of Health was given 12 months to address the management of contaminated water and medical waste at hospitals, including the use of wastewater treatment systems and incinerators.

The health ministry was also ordered to recover Rwf26.3 million that the Rwanda Biomedical Centre allegedly overpaid to a contractor involved in the construction of 24 incinerators at health facilities. The recovery is expected within three months.

Other resolutions targeted local infrastructure and settlement management. The Ministry of Local Government was given six months to address challenges in road construction programmes implemented with communities and the City of Kigali. It was also instructed to resolve within 12 months the issue of houses constructed by Nyabihu District in an illegal settlement located within the buffer zone of Volcanoes National Park.

The parliamentary resolutions place several government institutions under specific deadlines, with MPs demanding corrective action, financial recovery and greater accountability in the management of public resources.
