Mukwege Accuses President Tshisekedi of “Treason” Over Constitutional Reform Debate

KINSHASA, Democratic Republic of Congo, May 30, 2026 - Nobel Peace Prize laureate Dr. Denis Mukwege has sharply criticized President Félix Tshisekedi, accusing him of “grave and unforgivable treason” amid growing political tension over proposed constitutional reforms in the DRC.

In a statement issued on May 30, 2026, Mukwege warned that efforts linked to extending presidential mandates risk diverting attention from urgent national challenges, including insecurity in eastern provinces and ongoing public health crises such as Ebola outbreaks.

He argued that political debate within the ruling establishment, particularly within the UDPS party, has increasingly focused on the possibility of constitutional revision to allow for a third presidential term, rather than addressing pressing governance issues.

Mukwege also criticized members of parliament supporting the initiative, suggesting that political incentives and personal benefits were driving backing for the proposal.

According to him, some lawmakers from conflict-affected regions, including Ituri, North Kivu and South Kivu, are among those supporting the initiative, despite ongoing instability in their constituencies.

“The UDPS, which was once a model for the revolution, has become a conduit for conspiracy that is leading our country to destruction,” Mukwege said in his statement.

He urged President Tshisekedi to refocus on constitutional obligations and national stability, warning that history would judge leadership decisions made during the current political debate.

The remarks come after Tshisekedi suggested in early May that constitutional reform could be considered and that he would respect public demand regarding a potential extension of his mandate. He also indicated that the 2027 elections might not proceed as initially scheduled.
