Mali Awards Mining Rights to U.S. Firm Flagship, Signaling Strategic Sector Revival
Bamako, October 3, 2025 - On October 8, the Malian government took a decisive step to revitalize its gold mining sector, signing an agreement with U.S.-based company Flagship to resume production at the Morila gold mine, one of the country’s most prominent mineral assets. The deal was formalized by the Société de Recherche et d’Exploitation des Ressources Minérales du Mali (SOREM), which owns full capital of the mine in southern Mali.
Minister of Mines, Prof. Amadou Keita, highlighted the significance of the agreement as part of SOREM’s operationalization, a state-owned entity established under the directive of President Assimi Goïta to ensure that Mali’s mineral wealth directly contributes to national development. “The reforms undertaken aim to bring the mining sector back under state control within a framework of win-win partnerships with investors,” said Keita, urging SOREM to execute its mandate with diligence.
Economy and Finance Minister Alousséni Sanou echoed the optimism, noting that the Morila mine, which holds estimated reserves of 2.5 million ounces of gold, has the potential to catalyze economic growth following a nearly two-year shutdown.
Analysts view the agreement as part of Mali’s broader geopolitical and economic strategy. In recent months, senior U.S. officials, including White House Deputy Assistant Director for Counterterrorism Rudolph Atallah and Assistant Secretary of State for West Africa William B. Stevens, visited Bamako to propose American solutions for counterterrorism and private investment initiatives in the Sahel. The Morila deal may therefore reflect Mali’s willingness to engage U.S. investors alongside its existing collaboration with Russia, balancing strategic partnerships while addressing domestic economic and security challenges.
The restart of Morila represents both a symbolic and practical milestone, signaling the government’s commitment to restoring state influence over strategic resources and attracting international investment to bolster economic resilience.
