Former Commander of Bamako Military Region Dismissed from Malian Armed Forces
Bamako, December 12, 2025 - Colonel Alpha Yaya Sangaré, former commander of the Bamako military region, has been dismissed from the Malian Armed Forces (FAMA) following his arrest in connection with the publication of a book in which he denounced alleged “abuses by the army against civilian populations,” security sources confirmed on Thursday.
The decision underscores growing internal tensions within Mali’s military establishment, where discipline, loyalty, and adherence to the transition authorities’ line remain closely scrutinized amid an ongoing security crisis.
Supporters of the move argue that the dismissal could help reinforce cohesion within FAMA, by sanctioning voices seen as undermining unity at a time when the army is engaged on multiple fronts against jihadist groups. From this perspective, authorities view internal dissent as a potential threat to operational effectiveness and morale.
However, independent analysts and human rights observers have expressed concern over the implications of the decision. They warn that such measures could stifle internal debate, limit transparency on sensitive issues such as civilian protection, and fuel criticism from international partners and rights organizations.
The case also revives questions about the balance between national security and accountability, particularly in the context of Mali’s evolving security partnerships, including cooperation with the Africa Corps, which has faced allegations of controversial methods in counterterrorism operations.
Colonel Sangaré’s dismissal highlights the delicate line the transitional authorities are navigating between maintaining strict military discipline and addressing growing calls-both domestic and international-for openness and respect for human rights.
