EU Envoy Presents “New Approach” to Sahel to Prime Minister Abdoulaye Maïga
Bamako, February 17, 2026 - Mali’s Prime Minister Abdoulaye Maïga held talks Tuesday with European Union Special Representative for the Sahel João Gomes Cravinho, who presented the EU’s new strategy for engagement in the Sahel, officials said.
The meeting took place at the Prime Minister’s Office in Bamako, where the EU envoy was received in the presence of Foreign Affairs Minister Abdoulaye Diop, who formally introduced the visiting delegation.
EU Seeks Renewed Engagement
During the visit, João Gomes Cravinho, accompanied by the Head of the European Union Delegation to Mali, outlined the key pillars of what Brussels describes as a “New Approach” to the Sahel.
According to the EU representative, the strategy aims to:
Maintain the European Union’s commitment in the Sahel
Improve political dialogue
Strengthen cooperation with Sahel states
Rebuild mutual trust
He noted that the 27 member states of the European Union have agreed on the need to revitalize relations with countries in the Sahel region.
Focus on Political Dialogue
The discussions emphasized the importance of constructive dialogue between Mali and the European Union, at a time when regional security and development challenges remain significant.
The visit forms part of ongoing diplomatic consultations between Mali and its international partners, aimed at redefining cooperation frameworks and strengthening strategic partnerships in the Sahel.
