DRC at UN Urges Protecting Education in Sudan Conflict

New York, United Nations, August 9, 2026 - At an August 7 Arria-formula United Nations Security Council meeting on safeguarding education in Sudan-organised by Somalia and co-sponsored by the DRC and Liberia-Deputy Permanent Representative Jocelyne Kabengele Lukundula argued that protecting education is a condition of conflict resolution, not a post-war add-on. She cited the DRC’s Child Protection Law 09/001 (2009), National Education Framework Law 14/004 (2014), and the Education in Emergencies strategy for 2025-2029, and called for an immediate ceasefire, unhindered humanitarian access, and inclusive political dialogue. Kinshasa also urged support for Sudanese education continuity, protection of schools from military use, and welcomed African Union Peace and Security Council and AU/CIEFFA initiatives.
