Court Hears Domestic Violence Case Involving Disputed Marital Conflict

Djibouti, June 14, 2026 - A domestic dispute that escalated into violence was brought before the criminal court of first instance last Tuesday, where a young man stood trial for assaulting his wife.

The prosecution requested a one-year suspended prison sentence and 100,000 Djiboutian francs in damages in a case that highlighted the severity of violence within the household and its legal consequences.

The couple, parents of two children, appeared in court accompanied by relatives, with tensions evident from the outset of the hearing.

The complainant, who stated she is the family’s primary provider due to her husband’s unemployment, told the court that an argument over financial matters escalated into physical violence, alleging she was attacked with a screwdriver. She told the court her foremost concern was her safety, requesting protection, along with 200,000 francs in compensation.

The defendant denied all allegations, claiming he was the victim of a conspiracy involving his wife’s relatives, whom he accused of fueling family tensions and attempting to separate him from his wife and children.

During proceedings, the presiding judge referred to a medical certificate indicating 18 days of temporary incapacity for work, describing it as a serious element in the case.

Both parties maintained their positions throughout the hearing, with no sign of reconciliation. Family members present in court also aligned themselves with opposing sides, underscoring the depth of the conflict.
