Cholera Outbreak Worsens in Burundi as Authorities Enforce Sanctions

Bujumbura, April 6, 2026 - Burundi is grappling with a worsening outbreak of cholera, with cases continuing to rise amid limited access to clean water and environmental contamination following recent floods.

Since the beginning of 2026, health authorities have recorded at least 3,500 cases nationwide, with a sharp increase observed in recent weeks. In just three days, 38 new infections were reported, with patients receiving treatment at the Prince Régent Charles Hospital. Among them, 18 cases originated from heavily affected areas including Bubanza and Bukirasazi.

In response, the government has introduced stricter measures to curb the spread of the disease. The ministries of health, security, and economy have announced sanctions against individuals failing to comply with hygiene regulations, with the measures taking effect on 6 April.

Health Minister Lydwine Baradahana stated that the sanctions are intended to enforce existing public health laws and strengthen efforts to contain the outbreak, which has already mobilized significant government resources.

Authorities attribute the rapid spread of the disease to several factors, including the consumption of contaminated water, unsafe handling of septic systems, and illegal water connections to main supply lines.

Over the past three months, the Burundian government, alongside its partners, has allocated approximately 3 billion Burundian francs to combat the outbreak, funding patient care as well as public awareness and emergency response initiatives.
