JNIM Claims IED Attack on Joint Military Patrol in Timbuktu Region
Timbuktu, April 3, 2026 - The security situation in northern Mali remains tense after the Group for the Support of Islam and Muslims (Jama'at Nusrat al-Islam wal-Muslimin) claimed responsibility for an improvised explosive device (IED) attack targeting a joint patrol. According to the group’s statement, the attack occurred on Friday morning, April 3, 2026, in the Gargando area of the Timbuktu region. The target was reportedly a patrol composed of Malian Armed Forces personnel and members associated with the Afrika Korps. The explosion allegedly struck a military vehicle, resulting in multiple casualties, with several deaths and injuries reported. A helicopter was later deployed to evacuate the wounded to Timbuktu, according to local accounts cited in the report. No official confirmation of the incident, including casualty figures, had been released by Malian authorities at the time of reporting.
