Woman Arrested for Allegedly Defrauding Ugandan MP of Shs60 Million in Fake Government
Kampala, July 6, 2026 - Ugandan authorities have arrested a 53-year-old businesswoman accused of defrauding a Member of Parliament of Shs60 million after allegedly posing as an official from the Office of the President.
Investigators allege that the suspect convinced the legislator she could facilitate access to government programmes and services for the MP's constituency, claiming to have influence within the presidency.
Believing the promises, the MP reportedly transferred the funds in several instalments over a period beginning in June 2025.
The alleged scheme came to light after the legislator reported the matter to authorities, leading to the suspect's arrest.
Investigators are now examining whether the suspect used the same method to target other victims, raising concerns that the fraud may have extended beyond a single case.
Authorities have urged public officials and citizens to verify the identity and authority of individuals claiming to represent government institutions before making financial transactions or responding to requests involving public programmes.
The investigation remains ongoing as authorities work to determine the full scope of the alleged fraud.
Overall, the briefing groups these points under one storyline - Woman Arrested for Allegedly Defrauding Ugandan MP of Shs60 Million in Fake Government Scheme - within the July 16-31 reporting cycle for UGANDA.
