Witness Says Congo Airstrip Was Discussed In Besigye Treason Case

Kampala, August 28, 2026 - A prosecution witness in the High Court treason trial of opposition politician Kizza Besigye alleged that the accused discussed using Mahagi airstrip in Congo as an escape route after a purported assassination plot, underscoring the political sensitivity of the case.

Andrew Wilson, alias Orlando, testified that Besigye and alleged associates were expected to camp in Entebbe, conduct surveillance around State House and undergo about one week of training before the alleged attack on the President.

The court also heard a recording with a voice identified as Besigye's recounting alleged backing from military officers.

The trial remains nationally consequential because it involves a leading opposition figure and allegations touching the presidency, security services and the conduct of Uganda's political contestation.
