Washington Hosts Inaugural Ministerial Meeting on Critical Minerals, Spotlight on DRC

Washington, February 8, 2026 - Washington, D.C., February 4, 2026 - The Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) is at the center of global attention as the inaugural Ministerial Meeting on Critical Minerals convenes this Wednesday under the chairmanship of U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio. The high-level gathering aims to strengthen and diversify global supply chains to reduce China's dominance in this strategically vital sector.

The meeting forms part of “Project Vault,” an initiative launched under the Trump administration to establish a strategic U.S. reserve of critical minerals including rare earth elements, cobalt, and lithium, backed by $12 billion in funding.

Global Participation Organizers expect delegations from over 50 countries, spanning Europe, Asia, and Africa. The DRC will be represented at the highest level, with President Félix Antoine Tshisekedi officially attending.

A Central Player The Democratic Republic of Congo, with its vast reserves of cobalt and coltan, is considered a key actor in the global energy transition. Analysts say the Washington meeting could redefine the geopolitical balance around critical minerals, positioning Kinshasa as a strategic partner of the United States.

Recent bilateral engagements, particularly with Minister of Mines Louis Watum Kabamba, underscore a new phase in the DRC-U.S. strategic partnership. Washington has signaled interest in a “minerals for security” agreement, potentially offering preferential access to Congolese copper, cobalt, and coltan in return for American investments in infrastructure.
