Washington Hails Progress in DRC-Rwanda Peace Agreement Implementation

Washington, D.C. - The United States welcomed what it described as a significant step forward in the implementation of the peace agreement between the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and Rwanda, following high-level talks in the U.S. capital.

Delegations from both countries convened on 21 and 22 October 2025 in Washington for the third session of the Joint Security Coordination Mechanism (JSCM). The meeting, held under the auspices of the United States, Qatar, and the African Union Commission, aimed to accelerate the execution of the peace accord signed on 27 June 2025, which had been technically initialed earlier on 18 June 2025.

Officials focused discussions on measures to neutralize the Democratic Forces for the Liberation of Rwanda (FDLR) and on the gradual lifting of Rwanda’s defensive measures, steps seen as crucial to stabilizing bilateral relations after years of tension.

“The dialogue reflects a shared commitment to peace and security in the region,” a U.S. State Department spokesperson said, emphasizing Washington’s support for continued international oversight.

The fourth session of the JSCM is already scheduled for 19 and 20 November 2025, signaling ongoing coordination between the two nations under the watchful eye of international partners. Analysts suggest that consistent engagement through the JSCM could pave the way for tangible progress in security and diplomatic cooperation along the DRC-Rwanda border.
