WAEMU Grants CFA 100 Million to Mali to Combat Desert Locust Resurgence

Bamako, February 5, 2026 - Mali has received an exceptional financial contribution of 100 million CFA francs from the Commission of the West African Economic and Monetary Union (WAEMU) to strengthen efforts against the resurgence of the desert locust in the western part of the country. The symbolic check was presented on Thursday at the Ministry of Agriculture by Roberto Alexandre Vieira, WAEMU Commission Representative in Mali, to the Minister of Agriculture, Daniel Siméon Kelema. The funds were subsequently handed over to the National Locust Control Center (CNLCP) during the ceremony. According to WAEMU’s representative, the special contribution is intended to support the implementation of Mali’s National Locust Risk Response Plan, reinforcing prevention, monitoring, and rapid intervention activities to protect agricultural production. The initiative reflects regional solidarity within WAEMU and aims to mitigate potential threats to food security posed by desert locust infestations.
