UPDF Marine Unit Targets Illegal Fishing Financiers On Lake Victoria

Kampala, August 19, 2026 - Uganda's military marine unit is shifting its Lake Victoria anti-illegal fishing strategy toward financiers and suppliers of prohibited gear, widening enforcement beyond individual fishers to the commercial networks behind the trade.

The approach targets those who fund, equip or transport illegal catches, including immature fish. Offenders caught transporting immature fish face fines of up to Shs20 million, while those using illegal gear risk prison terms of up to eight years.

Lake Victoria is a strategic economic asset for Uganda, supporting fisheries, exports and livelihoods across lakeside districts. Stronger enforcement is intended to protect fish stocks and reduce market distortions caused by illegal harvesting.

The policy has implications for fisheries investors, processors and exporters, who depend on sustainable supply chains and compliance with food safety and resource-management standards.
