United States Nears Agreement with Mali to Resume Intelligence Flights

Bamako, March 9, 2026 - The United States is reportedly close to reaching an agreement with Mali that would allow American aircraft and drones to resume intelligence-gathering operations over Malian territory, focusing on jihadist groups linked to al-Qaeda.

The potential resumption of operations comes after Washington lifted sanctions against several high-ranking Malian officials, including the Defense Minister, who had previously faced restrictions for alleged ties to Russian mercenaries. The decision addresses a key demand from the Malian government and could pave the way for renewed security cooperation between the two countries.

Officials indicated that the U.S. is particularly motivated by the ongoing search for an American pilot, Kevin Rideout, 48, who was kidnapped in Niamey, Niger, while working with the missionary organization Serving In Mission. He is now believed to be held by armed groups linked to the Islamic State in the Sahel, and his recovery is a priority in Washington’s renewed engagement with Bamako.

The security situation in Mali remains precarious, with jihadist groups expanding in multiple regions and continuing attacks on roads, economic infrastructure, and some mining operations. The proposed agreement for intelligence flights is part of broader efforts to address these persistent threats.
