Unclear Recordings Complicate Besigye Court Proceedings

Kampala, August 26, 2026 - Court proceedings involving opposition figure Dr Kizza Besigye were complicated by unclear audio recordings linked to an alleged Geneva meeting to overthrow President Yoweri Museveni.

The recordings, lasting more than two hours, contained portions that were difficult to understand among the four people said to have taken part in the meeting. Prosecutors are seeking to have Besigye found guilty of criminal contempt and committed to civil prison or fined.

A Uganda Prisons Service officer told the court that Besigye remained admitted at Mulago Hospital. Three state-appointed legal aid lawyers also said they had tried to meet Besigye and Lutale in prison, but both declined to instruct them.

The case remains politically significant because it involves a leading opposition figure and raises questions over due process, courtroom conduct and the handling of high-profile prosecutions in Uganda.
