UN Reopens Headquarters in Khartoum for First Time Since War Began

Khartoum April 2, 2026; The United Nations has reopened its headquarters in Khartoum for the first time since the outbreak of war in April 2023, marking a significant step toward restoring its operations in the Sudanese capital.

The reopening follows nearly three years of relocation to Port Sudan, where UN activities had been based due to ongoing fighting in Khartoum.

The ceremony was attended by senior Sudanese officials, including Foreign Minister Mohieddin Salem and Khartoum Governor Ahmed Osman Hamza, alongside representatives from the United Nations and its affiliated agencies.

Government officials welcomed the move, describing it as an important signal of improving conditions and renewed cooperation between Sudan and international partners.

The foreign minister said the return of UN operations to Khartoum reflects a shared commitment to stabilizing the country and advancing peace efforts. He emphasized the government’s intention to work closely with UN agencies under national initiatives aimed at achieving long-term stability.

He also reiterated the government’s position on the conflict, stating that authorities remain committed to restoring order and rejecting external interference in Sudan’s internal affairs.

The minister called on regional organizations, including the African Union and IGAD, to take more active roles in supporting stability and reassessing Sudan’s standing within regional frameworks.

UN officials highlighted the gradual resumption of activities in the capital as part of broader efforts to expand humanitarian operations and coordination across the country.
