Umma Party Delegation Presents Sudan Peace Plan To Quintet

Addis Ababa, August 2, 2026 - A delegation from Sudan's National Umma Party presented a proposal to end the country's war to the Quintet mechanism in Addis Ababa, despite a boycott decision by the party's own general secretariat. The delegation was led by Deputy Leader Mariam al-Sadiq al-Mahdi and included senior party officials Ali Gailoub, Abdel Halim Eissa Timan and Imam al-Hulu.

Its participation exposed deepening divisions inside one of Sudan's major civilian political forces. The party's proposal said any political process should begin with a ceasefire, civilian protection, humanitarian access and confidence-building measures before moving toward a broader settlement.

It argued that Sudan's war has become a national tragedy rather than a conventional political contest for power. The Quintet - the United Nations, African Union, European Union, IGAD and Arab League - is seeking common ground among Sudanese factions, but key civilian blocs including the Somoud and Tasis coalitions have declined to attend the Addis Ababa meetings over concerns about the process.

The divisions highlight the difficulty of building a credible civilian track alongside military negotiations.
