UK Appoints Former Intelligence Official as New Ambassador to Mali

Bamako -, October 23, 2025 - The United Kingdom has appointed Angus Philip McKee, a former intelligence official and veteran diplomat, as its new ambassador to Mali. McKee presented his credentials on Thursday to Mali’s transitional president, marking the start of his mission in Bamako.

A senior figure within the UK Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO), McKee previously served as head of the intelligence policy department and held several high-level diplomatic postings in some of the world’s most volatile regions, including Tripoli, Damascus, Erbil, and Beirut, as well as in London.

His appointment signals London’s intention to strengthen engagement with Mali amid the country’s ongoing security and political challenges. McKee is widely regarded for his expertise in security diplomacy and crisis management, honed over years of work in conflict-affected areas of the Middle East.

During the same ceremony, seven other newly appointed ambassadors also presented their credentials to the Malian head of state, underscoring Bamako’s continued efforts to maintain diplomatic relations amid a shifting geopolitical landscape.
