Ugandan Priest Appointed To Vatican Human Development Dicastery

Kampala, August 19, 2026 - Ugandan priest Emmanuel Katongole has been appointed as one of 12 new consultors to the Vatican's Dicastery for Promoting Integral Human Development, giving Uganda representation in a body focused on social development, justice and environmental stewardship.

Pope Leo made the appointments on August 18, 2026. The dicastery works on issues including human development, care for creation and the Catholic Church's social mission.

The appointment intersects with Uganda's growing faith-based engagement on environmental stewardship. In Kampala Archdiocese, Archbishop Paul Ssemogerere was among early trainees at Bethany Land Institute in Luweero District, where environmental stewardship training has since been integrated.

While primarily a religious appointment, the role carries diplomatic and soft-power significance for Uganda by linking local church leadership to global policy conversations on development, climate and social welfare.
