Uganda Speaker Among Thanks Museveni After Release From House Arrest

Kampala, August 26, 2026 - Anita Annet Among, speaker of the Ugandan parliament, thanked President Yoweri Museveni for pardoning and releasing her after days of house arrest, saying she is ready to resume her duties as MP for Bukedea District.

Among's pardon was announced on August 25. In a message on August 26, she thanked God for her freedom and praised Museveni for what she called fatherly kindness. She also thanked Chief of Defence Forces Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba for professionalism during the process.

Among had faced political pressure after being accused of embezzlement linked to parliamentary affairs. Her release came as Kampala and Kigali continued efforts to normalize security and diplomatic ties along the Rwanda-Uganda border.

For Rwanda, political developments in Uganda remain closely watched because bilateral relations, cross-border trade and regional security coordination depend on stability in Kampala's leadership circles.
