Uganda Nears First Oil as Cabinet Inspects Kingfisher Project in Kikuube

KIKUUBE, June 22, 2026 - Uganda's preparations for first oil received a major boost as the Vice President and the Prime Minister led a Cabinet delegation to inspect progress at the Kingfisher Oil Development Project, where construction has entered its final stages.

The visit highlighted significant progress at the project, with construction of the Central Processing Facility reported to be 99 percent complete and commissioning activities reaching 74 percent. Of the 31 planned production wells, 22 are ready for production, bringing the project closer to commercial oil production.

Project officials said the Kingfisher development, together with the Tilenga Project and the East African Crude Oil Pipeline (EACOP), has attracted investments exceeding US$12 billion, making the integrated oil developments among the largest industrial investments in Uganda's history.

The Cabinet delegation was also briefed on preparations for the safe commissioning of the facilities and the remaining activities required before first oil is achieved.

Government representatives reaffirmed their commitment to providing a stable investment environment and the infrastructure needed to support Uganda's emerging petroleum industry, emphasizing that the sector is expected to drive industrialization, economic growth, and long-term energy security.

The delegation also reviewed ongoing national content and community development initiatives associated with the project. Thousands of Ugandans have participated in project activities, while investments in education, healthcare, agriculture, skills development, and access to clean water have been implemented in host communities.

Project developers reiterated their commitment to achieving first oil safely and efficiently while ensuring the development delivers lasting economic and social benefits for Uganda.
