Uganda Airlines Told to Embrace Private Sector Reforms for Growth

KAMPALA, July 11, 2026 - Uganda Airlines has been urged to adopt private sector management principles and undertake major reforms aimed at improving efficiency, profitability and competitiveness in the aviation sector.

The Ministry of Finance said the national carrier must strengthen its commercial approach, improve operational performance and position itself as a reliable international airline capable of supporting Uganda’s broader economic growth ambitions.

The airline’s leadership has been encouraged to focus on sustainable business practices, stronger financial management and improved service delivery to transform the carrier into a world-class aviation company.

Uganda Airlines outlined plans to expand its network through the introduction of new routes, including connections to Accra and Kigali, as part of efforts to strengthen its regional and international presence.

The carrier also introduced a revised flight schedule as it continues efforts to improve operations and respond to changing market conditions.

However, the airline faces several challenges, including disruptions caused by regional conflicts, rising global fuel prices and public health concerns that have affected some operations.

Management has called for a specialised aviation procurement framework to simplify processes related to aircraft acquisition, leasing and purchasing aviation-specific equipment and services.

The airline’s board has also highlighted the need for additional capital investment to support fleet expansion, meet growing passenger demand and improve operational reliability.

Since its relaunch, Uganda Airlines has increased its presence at Entebbe International Airport and continues efforts to strengthen its position as a regional aviation player.
