U.S. Embassy Warns Citizens Against Travel to Mali Amid Worsening Security and Fuel Crisis

Bamako -, October 24, 2025 - The U.S. Embassy in Mali has issued a security alert urging American citizens to avoid traveling to the country, citing a deteriorating security environment compounded by nationwide fuel shortages.

In a statement published on its website on October 23, the embassy expressed concern over “persistent and unpredictable disruptions to gasoline and diesel supplies” affecting several cities, including the capital, Bamako. The shortages have led to long queues at fuel stations, impacted electricity availability, and raised fears of further instability.

“The U.S. Embassy warns that U.S. citizens should continue to avoid travel to Mali,” the alert stated. “Those already in the country should limit unnecessary movement and ensure their vehicles are fueled up, if possible.”

The embassy also noted that it is rarely able to provide emergency services outside the capital due to the current security conditions. Americans in Mali are advised to avoid demonstrations, not attempt to cross roadblocks, and remain vigilant at all times.

Just 24 hours after the embassy’s notice, the U.S. Department of State followed up with a separate alert, authorizing the departure of non-emergency personnel and family members of U.S. government employees from Mali due to escalating security risks.

Mali has been grappling with fuel shortages, insurgent attacks, and political uncertainty in recent months, factors that have increasingly strained daily life and heightened concerns among foreign diplomatic missions.
