Tshisekedi Says DRC Sovereignty Is Non-Negotiable As Peace Tracks Advance

Kinshasa, August 20, 2026 - President Felix Tshisekedi said the DRC's sovereignty, territorial integrity and unity are non-negotiable, framing the eastern conflict as a test of national authority and regional diplomacy.

Speaking at the Palais du Peuple during the 10th anniversary of the Higher College of Strategy and Defense, Tshisekedi said Kinshasa seeks a just and durable peace that is not imposed by force. Burundian President Evariste Ndayishimiye, identified as African Union chair, attended the event.

Tshisekedi called for the withdrawal of uninvited foreign forces, an end to support for armed groups and the restoration of state authority across the country. He cited ongoing African Union, Washington and Doha tracks as part of the diplomatic effort.

The message reinforces Kinshasa's insistence that any settlement must preserve central state authority, a key issue for security risk, mining operations and infrastructure planning in the east.
