Tshisekedi Defends Constitutional Revision Plans, Cites U.S.-Linked Judicial Reforms

Kinshasa, May 7, 2026 - President Félix Tshisekedi has reiterated his intention to revise the Constitution of the Democratic Republic of Congo, linking the initiative to judicial reforms associated with a strategic partnership signed with the United States.

Speaking during a press briefing in Kinshasa, the Head of State stated that certain reforms required under the cooperation framework with Washington would not be possible without constitutional changes, particularly in the justice sector.

Tshisekedi argued that constitutional reflection should not be viewed as controversial if it is aimed at addressing institutional challenges and preparing the country for future generations. He emphasized that such discussions are part of long-term governance planning rather than a violation of democratic principles.

The President also referenced a long-standing political vision attributed to his late father, Étienne Tshisekedi, who had expressed support for constitutional change once the UDPS came to power.

The remarks come as lawmakers continue examining a proposed bill regulating referendums and constitutional amendments, which includes provisions for a constituent assembly while maintaining restrictions on presidential term limits under existing constitutional safeguards.
