Tragedy in Ango: Two Killed by Police Officer on New Year’s Day
Kinshasa, January 11, 2026 - Ango, Tshopo Province, DRC - January 1, 2026
A police officer shot and killed two people in the Ango territory on New Year’s Day, plunging the community into shock and grief. Ango is located approximately 500 km north of Kisangani.
According to local sources, the victims were celebrating the arrival of the new year at a bar in the Ango shopping center when an altercation broke out. Around 8:00 PM, a police jeep arrived at high speed, and two officers disembarked, ordering the crowd to disperse. Moments later, one officer fired point-blank, killing two individuals.
The incident has sparked outrage among residents and local authorities. The interim administrator of Ango territory condemned the use of live ammunition against civilians, urging the police hierarchy to take swift action.
“What I deplore is that the police officers fired live ammunition at the population. I hope, through my report to the governor, that their superiors will authorize their arrest. This would be a good thing, because it is the very wish of the population: that peace reign here above all else,” the administrator stated.
The Vice-President of the Tshopo Provincial Assembly, Antoine Gambolipay, who represents Ango, echoed this call, demanding that both officers be apprehended and brought to justice.
Authorities report that one officer remains at large, while the other is in custody at his camp. Investigations are ongoing as the community awaits accountability.
