Traditional Justice Mechanisms Gain Official Recognition

By Jean-Marc Okito2 min readFrançais

ZINDER, Niger - During the presidential visit to Zinder on November 16, traditional leaders signed a framework agreement with the Ministry of Justice, formalizing their role in resolving civil disputes and minor criminal cases.

The agreement establishes protocols for case referral between traditional and formal justice systems and provides for training on fundamental legal principles. While the initiative aims to improve access to justice in remote areas, some legal experts have raised concerns about potential conflicts with statutory law and the protection of women's and children's rights within traditional proceedings.
